Showrooms and similar creative commercial projects provide a refreshing respite from residential work. Creative commercial projects require a different mindset and often call upon more than just his skills as a builder when troubleshooting.

Such was the case for the Saxum Tile Showroom in Pasadena. This project was not only built by Waterford Construction, it was designed by Rich Mortensen, himself. His vision for the showroom was to give it the feel of an art gallery. Rich opted for a modern industrial look with the polished concrete floors a black and white color palette and steel accents and beams throughout.

However, the volume of product that needed to be displayed for clients and designers was extensive making it difficult to keep that airy and spare art gallery feel. As a result, product needed to be expertly organized.

To that end, Rich designed a series of shelving, drawers, pull out display boards to display tile samples of varying sizes. Drawers were made at varying lengths to reveal the products within giving customers a sneak peak at their contents. He then designed islands where designers could roll out a set of plans with a client and experiment with various tile samples. The gut renovation took 3 months and 14 days to be exact including the manufacturing of the cabinetry and displays.
